Exhibition "The Shattered Self" at Catalunya campus CRAI

Tarragona Catalunya Campus

19:00 h

The Art Classroom of the Rovira i Virgili University presents the exhibition "The Shattered Self" by Esperança Cobo. A critical look at digital identity in the algorithmic era.

The installation exhibition The Shattered Self invites us to reflect on the conflict that goes through the construction of identity on social networks. In a digital environment dominated by the image and constant connection, a narrative marked by self-referentiality and the cult of the self emerges, where the contemporary subject exhibits himself in a compulsive, almost fanatical way, fueled by a technology that seduces, classifies and codes, deeply impregnated by the logic of neoliberal marketing.

In this scenario, the self is fragmented. Far from being neutral, platforms operate under the logic of algorithms, which determine what we see, what we share and how we represent ourselves. These dynamics can generate biases, reinforce stereotypes and standardize content, displacing diversity - aesthetic, opinion, gender, race or social class - towards the periphery.

Thus, the digital individual becomes a product: atomized, overexposed and conditioned by an attention economy that prioritizes visibility and recognition over authenticity. The self ceases to be an essence to become a personal brand, defined by data, metrics and external expectations.

The fragmented self questions this pervasive, almost ontological transformation of the way we perceive ourselves and others. Technology not only mediates our relationships, but also reconfigures identities within a capitalist system that promotes individualism and erodes the sense of collectivity.

The opening ceremony will take place on October 21 at 7:00 pm in the lobby of the CRAI campus Catalunya.
